VIDEO: BEYONCE FEAT. KANYE WEST “EGO”

Posted by Serge On August - 13 - 2009Comments Off

EGO1I Am… Sasha Fierce is the third studio album by Beyoncé Knowles, first released on November 8, 2008 in Japan and later worldwide throughout November and December from record label Columbia Records. The album reached the top ten on thirty-two charts worldwide. It debuted at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart, making Knowles the second female R&B artist this decade to have her first three albums debut in the top spot, and has been certified double platinum by the RIAA, making it Knowles’ third consecutive number-one album.

The album has so far spawned four worldwide hits: “If I Were a Boy”, “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)”, “Halo” and “Sweet Dreams”, as well as the U.S. only singles “Diva” and “Ego”.

“My goal for the video is simplicity,” the 27-year-old singer told EW. “In ‘Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)’, I saw this old tape of Bob Fosse’s wife, and I used that as inspiration. I thought in this world, with all the technology and everything that’s going on, to strip everything down—great idea. So I kind of did the same thing, but glossy and black, for ‘Ego’.”

VIDEO: SPANISH STROLL – MINK DEVILLE

Willy DeVille, a singer and songwriter and the leader of the group Mink DeVille, whose adventurous forays into rhythm and blues, Cajun music and salsa made him one of the most original figures of the New York punk scene of the 1970s, died on Thursday in Manhattan. He was 58.

The cause was pancreatic cancer, said his publicist, Carol Kaye.

Mr. DeVille, a regular at CBGB in the mid-1970s, lent his bluesy voice and eclectic musical tastes to Mink DeVille, one of the club’s main draws. A disciplined songwriter with a deep admiration for the Atlantic Records sound of the Drifters and Ben E. King, he drew from many sources, including Latin music, French ballads, New Orleans funk and Cajun accordion music. He was, the critic Robert Palmer wrote in The New York Times in 1980, “idiomatic, in the broadest sense, and utterly original.”

NEW MUSIC: LMFAO “PARTY ROCK”

lmfaoSky Blu and Redfoo of LMFAO may actually be having as much fun as they describe in their music, but there’s still little doubt they’re a comedy act. The liner notes for Party Rock do indeed include dancefloor polaroids of beautiful babes, but also plenty of shiny robots smiling for the camera. For their full-length debut, Party Rock, the dance hit “I’m in Miami Bitch” is firmly in place, and still sounding pretty hilarious as a satirical exposé of the hedonistic Winter Music Conference held every year. Sky Blu and Redfoo have almost as many laugh lines in their lyrics as the Lonely Island, even if their production aesthetic shows more than a little knowledge of Spank Rock. They’re solid producers overall, even if they run out of song ideas halfway through the album (no extra points for being able to predict the theme or lyrics of “What Happens at the Party” or “Leaving U 4 the Groove”). Pitched somewhere between a self-aware BrokeNCYDE and more sincere party rap (as crazy as that sounds), Party Rock is an indulgent record with plenty of fun and immaturity to keep you partying for days.

VIDEO: JAMES BROWN GREATEST DANCE MOVES EVER-THERE WAS A TIME LIVE

Posted by gator915 On July - 27 - 2009Comments Off

James Brown’s performances were famous for their intensity and length. His own stated goal was to “give people more than what they came for — make them tired, ’cause that’s what they came for.’”[40] Brown’s concert repertoire consisted mostly of his own hits and recent songs, with a few R&B covers mixed in. Brown danced vigorously as he sang, working popular dance steps such as the Mashed Potato into his routine along with dramatic leaps, splits and slides. In addition, his horn players and backup singers (The Famous Flames) typically performed choreographed dance routines, and later incarnations of the Revue included backup dancers. Male performers in the Revue were required to wear tuxedoes and cummerbunds long after more casual concert wear became the norm among the younger musical acts. Brown’s own extravagant outfits and his elaborate processed hairdo completed the visual impression.

A James Brown concert typically included a performance by a featured vocalist, such as Vicki Anderson or Marva Whitney, and an instrumental feature for the band, which sometimes served as the opening act for the show. Although Brown released many live albums, Say It Live & Loud: Live in Dallas 08.26.68, released by Polydor in 1998, was one of only a few audio recordings that captured a performance of the James Brown Revue from beginning to end.

THE HISTORY OF ROCK & ROLL DVD SET

Posted by gator915 On June - 7 - 2009Comments Off

historyofrr460

Serving as an introduction for neophytes and a refresher course for experts, The History of Rock and Roll is a mammoth and, when considered on its own terms, frequently successful undertaking. The series, which was first presented in 1995, consumes some 578 minutes, with 10 episodes (there are no bonus features) spread out over five discs. Its pedigree (executive producers include Quincy Jones, while respected writers Peter Guralnick and Greil Marcus are listed as consultants) is impressive, as is its scope, beginning in the pre-rock days of bluesman Muddy Waters and boogie woogie master Louis Jordan and continuing through the death of Kurt Cobain and the birth of the Lollapalooza festival in the mid-1990s. Along the way, dozens of big-name performers (with the notable exception of the Beatles) are on hand to lead us through the story.

On the minus side, the format–clips of musical performances cut short by a parade of talking heads–while typical of the genre, will frustrate those who come for the music alone. Nor is it likely that anyone who studies such things will find much here that hasn’t already been seen. To be sure, there are some terrific moments, like the profile of Bob Dylan (in part 5, “Plugging In”), some cool clips of relatively obscure legends like James Burton and T-Bone Walker (in part 7, “Guitar Heroes”), and rarely seen live bits with Jimi Hendrix, Steely Dan, Iggy Pop (goofing on the Dinah Shore Show in ’77), and many others scattered throughout the set. Part 8, which chronicles the ’70s, is surprisingly compelling (one forgets how many major artists–Bruce Springsteen, Bob Marley, Stevie Wonder–came into their own in a decade remembered largely for disco and faceless arena rock), while part 9, “Punk,” is arguably the most entertaining of the lot.

In the end, it’s the lack of complete musical performances that is the set’s Achilles’ heel. Then again, with their appetites whetted here, perhaps viewers will move on to other, more detailed looks at their heroes–beginning with, say, The Beatles Anthology. –Sam Graham

VIDEO: Esmée Denters – Outta Here

esmee danters

Esmee Denters is a singer-songwriter who began singing cover versions of popular songs on YouTube back in August 2006. She caught the attention of Dutch artist manager Jonathan Berhane who in turn introduced her to Grammy nominated songwriter and manager Billy Mann.

Denters’ manager arranged for her to meet Justin Timberlake at one of his concerts [2] and from there they signed the deal. Tennman Records announced that she would be opening for Timberlake at 10 venues during his 2007 European tour.[3] According to several magazines she is the first unsigned singer in history to go directly from a personal YouTube posting to commercially performing on a major stage.

Tennman Era

Denters finalised her deal with Tennman records [1] in late 2007 and began working with Justin Timberlake on her first album, on to which Denters appeared on Dutch radio channel Radio 538 on April 12 and confirmed her debut album was titled “Outta Here“. She talked about working with producers and writers Ryan Tedder, Stargate and Timberlake. The first single off the album, is “Outta Here” (a song off the album of the same name, produced by Polow da Don), and was released to radio on April 13 and was made available to download from April 14, 2009. A video for the single began production on March 25, 2009 and premiered on Dutch music channel TMF on May 13, 2009[4].

Oprah Winfrey invited the rising star to appear on a special edition of her title show which was dedicated to Youtube.

In November 2008 Denters and Timberlake released a duet in the US called “Follow my Lead” as a charity single. The proceeds of the single will be donated to a chain of children’s hospitals that Timberlake supports.[5] It was announced that in 2009 she will support Enrique Iglesias‘ Greatest Hits tour at European Venues.[6] On March 15, 2009 following Youtube’s copyright dispute with the British Song Writer’s Association Denters was banned from Youtube for a few days due to her covering songs which had been removed by publishing companies.
